Shocking news from Greensboro: Geno Auriemma has announced his retirement effective Wednesday morning, citing family issues, the school announced in a press release. Associate head coach Chris Dailey will retire as well, leaving assistant Jamelle Elliot to coach next week’s Final Four should UConn advance. The school will make a decision on the open position following the conclusion of the Huskies’ season.
The entire release, after the jump.
Nah, just kidding. This was, of course, the lamest April Fools prank I could think of.
It’s Tuesday morning here in Greensboro where Geno Auriemma will be coaching UConn for the forseeable future. Tonight, he’ll lead the Huskies against rival Rutgers with a berth to the Final Four on the line. The prize for whoever wins? A game against suddenly dangerous Stanford, who looked outstanding against Maryland in last night’s Elite Eight.
Game time is 9:07 p.m. on ESPN (hopefully that will be an April Fools joke, too).
In the other half of the bracket, it’ll be LSU (who ground UNC down into a pile of dust) taking on the Tennessee-Texas A&M winner. Do you want a Final Four with four of the five best teams AND absolutely no clue who will win? Root for the top seeds tonight.
The DC blog will be live around 6:30 tonight, bringing you any late-breaking news, as well as the lineups and whatnot.
In the meantime, I need to make sure we aren’t checked out 14 hours premature, and then I’ll be fulfilling my lifelong dream of eating Chick-Fil-A for lunch. Mmm.
See you tonight.
